In 2013, Lehigh University started two parallel projects that changed the way we handle copyright infringement resolution. Building a logging infrastructure on the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) allowed us to correlate data in ways we never could. Tying together network and authentication data, we developed a network history tool that gave us the visibility required to process many things, including copyright infringements. Exposing the data via an API enabled us to programmatically tie infringement notifications with users to use the University’s ticketing system; Footprints for a workflow that managed compliance from start to end. What once required an IT staff member with broad access and hours of time can now be done by any staff member in minutes.
